The Subclass 500 Student Visa
Australia's Student visa (subclass 500) covers most international students enrolled in a registered course. You'll need a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from your institution before applying.
Key Requirements
- A Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
- Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) statement explaining your study and return intentions
- Proof of sufficient funds for tuition, living costs, and travel
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of your stay
- English proficiency evidence, typically IELTS or an equivalent test
The GTE Requirement
Unlike some other countries, Australia specifically requires a written statement addressing why you intend to study in Australia and that you genuinely intend a temporary stay for study purposes. This is assessed individually, so generic or copied statements are a common reason for refusal — it's worth writing this in your own words, tailored to your actual circumstances.
Intakes
Australian universities commonly have a February intake as the primary one, along with a July intake at many institutions — different from the UK and Canada's typical September start, so it's worth planning your application timeline around this.
Post-Study Work
Eligible graduates can apply for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), which allows work rights after study, with duration depending on your qualification level and, in some cases, your study location.
