Study Permit, Not a "Student Visa"

Canada's equivalent of a student visa is called a Study Permit. To apply, you first need an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) — only DLIs can host international students on a study permit.

What You'll Need to Apply

  • A letter of acceptance from a DLI
  • Proof of financial support for tuition and living costs
  • A valid passport
  • In most cases, a medical exam and biometrics
  • A statement of purpose explaining your study plan

Proving You Can Afford It

Canada requires proof you can cover tuition plus a set living cost amount, which varies depending on whether you're studying in Quebec or elsewhere in Canada. This can be shown through bank statements, a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC), or a letter from a financial institution.

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

Graduates of eligible Canadian programs can apply for a PGWP allowing them to work in Canada after graduation, with the permit length generally tied to the length of the study program (up to a maximum of three years). This is one of the more flexible post-study work options available internationally.

Processing Times

Processing times vary by intake and your home country's visa office workload, so it's worth applying as early as your acceptance letter allows rather than waiting until close to your intake date.
