Documents — Keep These On You, Not in Checked Luggage
- Passport with visa, plus photocopies stored separately
- University offer/acceptance letter and CAS or equivalent
- Proof of accommodation booking
- Academic transcripts and certificates (originals, not just digital copies)
- Visa and financial documents used in your application
- Passport-sized photos (several — useful for local registrations after arrival)
Money Matters
Arrange some local currency in cash for your first few days before your bank account is set up, and inform your bank back home about your travel dates so international card transactions aren't blocked. Research how to open a local bank account — some universities offer same-day setup for new international students.
Health and Insurance
Confirm your health insurance is active from your arrival date (not just from your course start date), carry any ongoing prescription medication with its prescription, and get any required vaccinations well ahead of departure.
Practical Packing
Pack for the climate you're actually arriving into, not just the climate for most of the year — arriving in the UK or Canada in winter requires different clothing than you'd pack for Dhaka's weather. A universal power adapter and a lightweight daypack for the first week of errands are worth prioritizing.
Before You Leave
Register with your university's international student office in advance if possible, save emergency contacts (including your country's embassy at your destination) in your phone, and share your travel itinerary with family.
